No error output when compiling in a directory that does not contain an app

If I run rebar in a directory that is not an Erlang application rebar does
not inform me of this as some sort of error. For example:
/tmp$ rebar compile
==> tmp (compile)
It may be useful to print a warning or error if there is no app to compile.
/tmp$ rebar eunit
produces no output. Is this by design?
